LA NOSTALGIE DU TÉLÉGRAMME

Une page d’histoire vient de se tourner. Orange a mis fin à une pratique remplacée aujourd’hui par les technologies modernes. Né avec le télégraphe aux États-Unis, le télégramme est arrivé en France en 1879 et a tiré sa révérence à 23h59 le 30 avril dernier.

Surnommé affectueusement “le petit bleu”, le télégramme annonçait une nouvelle urgente, souvent triste mais parfois joyeuse. Mais finalement, il a dû se mettre au goût du jour et céder le passage au téléphone, télex, fax, SMS et mail. La concision des tweets rappelle peut-être celle des télégrammes.

REMINISCING ABOUT TELEGRAMS

History has turned a page recently. Orange has put a stop to a practice which has been replaced these days by modern technology. Originating with the telegraph in the United States, the telegram arrived in France in 1879 and passed peacefully away at 23.59 on 30 April this year.

Affectionately known as “the little blue one”, a telegram announced an urgent piece of news, often sad but sometimes joyful. But in the end, it had to be brought in line with current tastes and give way to the telephone, telex, fax, text messages and email. The brevity of tweets has perhaps something of the telegram about them.

Nevertheless we like to reminisce about another era, less frenetic than today. HAUSSMANN: VANDALE OU URBANISTE DE GÉNIE?

Nommé préfet de la Seine à Paris en 1853, le Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann s’est mis à exécuter les projets de Louis Napoléon pour le nouveau Paris, inspiré par l’exil de l’Empereur à Londres (1836-40). En l’espace de seize ans, Haussmann a réussi à bouleverser plus de la moitié de la ville, détruisant les quartiers populaires dont la population était en croissance inexorable, malgré l’épidémie de choléra de 1832.

Haussmann a fait polémique jusqu’à nos jours. On l’accuse d’ingénierie sociale, d’être obsédé par la ligne droite, d’avoir littéralement mis Paris sens dessus dessous. Si vous aimez flâner sur les Grands Boulevards (à l’instar d’Yves Montand), sachez qu’ils ne sont pas tous attribuables à l’origine à Haussmann, mais ses rénovations au milieu du XIXe siècle les ont souvent amenés en plein coeur de Paris.

À la place des quartiers où les riches côtoyaient les pauvres, Haussmann a créé des arrondissements riches et d’autres beaucoup moins, les soi-disant quartiers populaires. Mais chaque quartier avait maintenant son square et la ville tout entière bénéficiait d’un vrai système d’égouts. Pour la première fois, des aqueducs amenaient de l’eau potable des réservoirs à la ville et les rues étaient dotées de lampadaires, de kiosques à journaux et kiosques à musique, et de grilles en fer, les ancêtres peut-être des entrées art nouveau de beaucoup de stations de métro.

Haussmann était sans aucun doute le “père” du métropole moderne qu’on connaît aujourd’hui et qu’on aime avec tous ses petits défauts.

HAUSSMANN: VANDAL OR BRILLIANT TOWN PLANNER?

Appointed as Seine prefect in Paris in 1853, Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann began to carry out Louis Napoléon’s plans for “the new Paris”, inspired by the Emperor’s exile in London (1836-40). In the space of sixteen years, Haussmann succeeded in making radical changes to more than half the town, destroying the working class areas whose population was inexorably rising, despite the cholera epidemic of 1832.

Haussmann has been controversial and still is today. He’s accused of social engineering, of being obsessed with straight lines, of having literally turned Paris upside down. If you like strolling down the large boulevards (following Yves Montand’s example), note that they are not all originally attributable to Haussmann, but his renovations in the middle of the nineteenth century often brought them right into the heart of Paris.

In place of the parts of town where the rich rubbed shoulders with the poor, Haussmann created rich districts and others which were a lot less so, the so-called “quartiers populaires”. But each district now had its public garden and the whole town benefitted from a proper sewage system. For the first time, aqueducts brought drinking water from reservoirs into the town and the streets were endowed with lampposts, newspaper stands, bandstands and iron railings, perhaps the forerunners of the “art nouveau” entrances to underground stations.

Hausmann was without any doubt the “father” of the modern metropolis which we know today and which we love, warts and all.
