Le prix Nobel de la littérature vient d’être décerné à l’écrivain français Patrick Modiano, acclamé comme le Marcel Proust du vingt-et-unième siècle. C’est le quinzième gagnant français de ce prix prestigieux.
L’académie suédoise souligne ‘l’art de la mémoire avec lequel il a évoqué les destinées humaines les plus insaisissables et dévoilé le monde de l’occupation’.
Peut-être doit-il ces aperçus à son enfance difficile (il est né en 1945), son éducation et une adolescence terrible qui ont beaucoup marqué sa vie. Fils d’une mère actrice flamande et d’un père juif italien, il a été élevé par ses grands-parents et a passé plusieurs années en pensionnat.
Son style est simple et sophistiqué en même temps. Tout le monde connaît son aveu célèbre qu’il était inquiet d’écrire toujours un peu le même livre. Il en a écrit une trentaine qui, c’est vrai, se concentrent souvent sur le Paris de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

The Nobel prize for literature has just been awarded to the French writer Patrick Modiano, hailed as the Marcel Proust of the twenty-first century. He’s the fifteenth French winner of this prestigious prize.
The Swedish academy stresses ‘the art of memory with which he has evoked the most hard to capture human experiences and described life under the occupation.’ Perhaps he owes these insights to his difficult childhood (he was born in 1945), his upbringing and his terrible adolescence which had a big effect on his life. The son of a Flemish actress and an Italian Jew, he was brought up by his grandparents and spent several years at boarding school.
His style is simple yet sophisticated. He famously admitted that he was worried that he was continually writing the same book. He wrote thirty of them which, it’s true, often focus on Paris during the Second World war.
