LE MARTYR DE SIVENS

La mort le week-end dernier du jeune homme Rémi Fraisse, étudiant en botanique, a provoqué des remous dans toute la France. D’après une amie, bouleversée par la tragédie, l’écolo est allé presque par hasard pour participer à la manif contre le projet de barrage de Sivens, près de Gaillac dans le Tarn. Discret et pacifiste, il ne méritait pas une mort violente, prétendument aux mains de la police.

Pourquoi a-t-il fallu la mort de quelqu’un pour avertir le gouvernement que Sivens est devenu un deuxième Notre-Dame-des-Landes ? (Voir mon article de blog Les Zadistes contre l’Ayraultport : https://saliannefrenchfocus.wordpress.com/2012/11/19).  Selon des experts, le projet est sur-dimensionné et mal adapté, aurait un effet néfaste sur l’environnement et sur la collectivité et coûterait beaucoup trop, simplement pour satisfaire les besoins en eau d’une poignée de maïsiculteurs.

Croire que la police n’y est pour rien serait peu sincère. La police et le gouvernement vont certainement devoir payer les pots cassés.  Entretemps, la France pleure la mort inutile d’encore un innocent.

 

 

 

THE MARTYR OF SIVENS

The death last weekend of the young man Rémi Fraisse, a botany student, has caused shockwaves throughout France. According to a friend, devastated by the tragedy, the environmentalist went almost by chance to the demonstration against the dam project at Sivens, near Gaillac in the Tarn. A quiet pacifist, he didn’t deserve to die a violent death, allegedly at the hands of the police.

Why did someone have to die to make the government aware that Sivens has become a second Notre-Dame-des-Landes (See my blog post L’Ayraultport : https://saliannefrenchfocus.wordpress.com/2012/11/19 ). According to experts, the project is too big and unsuitable, would have a harmful effect on the environment and the community and would cost far too much, simply to satisfy the water needs of a handful of maize growers.

It would be disingenuous to believe that the police don’t bear any responsibility. The police and the government are certainly going to have to pick up the pieces. Meanwhile, France is mourning the pointless death of another innocent person.

LES ZADISTES CONTRE L’AYRAULTPORT

Les manifestations samedi contre le projet d’aéroport de Notre-Dame-des-Landes près de Nantes, nous donnent l’occasion de tenir compte de la tournure d’esprit typiquement française qui prend plaisir à adapter les tournures de phrase de leur langue aux événements du moment.

Savez-vous ce que c’est qu’un zadiste ? Il s’agit d’un occupant d’une ZAD, une zone d’aménagement différé. Dans le cas de Nantes, c’est quelqu’un qui habite à l’intérieur du périmètre de l’aéroport proposé, une zone que les habitants ont surnommé Zone À Défendre.

On parle aussi de l’Ayraultport, un bon jeu de mots qui se sert du nom du premier ministre Jean-Marc Ayrault, ancien maire de Nantes à qui le projet est cher.

On surnomme les écoguerriers qui sont de la partie les Camilles, car, pour éviter de se faire identifier par les médias ou la police, beaucoup, garçons ou filles, âgés de 20 ans ou de 80 ans, se font appeler Camille.

Des néologismes poussent comme des champignons autour du bocage nantais et du site projeté qui, lui-même, s’est fait rebaptisé Notre-Dame-des-Colères.

THE ZADISTES OPPOSED TO THE AIRPORT

Saturday’s demonstrations against the proposed airport at Notre-Dame-des-Landes near Nantes, give us an opportunity to take notice of the typically French mindset which takes pleasure in adapting turns of phrase in their language to the events of the moment.

Do you know what a ‘zadiste’ is? It’s an occupant of a ZAD, a future development zone. In the case of Nantes, it’s someone who lives inside the perimeter of the planned airport, a zone which its inhabitants have nicknamed a ‘zone to be defended.’

People are also talking about l’Ayraultport, a good pun which makes uses of the name of the prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, the former mayor of Nantes who is very keen on the project.

The eco-warriors who are participating are being called the Camilles, because, in order to avoid identification by the media or the police, many of them, boys and girls, aged 20 or 80, are calling themselves Camille.

Neologisms are popping up like mushrooms around the Nantes ‘bocage’ and the proposed site which has rebaptised itself Notre-Dame of Anger.
