UN REVERS CUISANT POUR LES ÉCOLOS

La démission de Nicolas Hulot de son poste de ministre de la transition écologique et solidaire du gouvernement Macron semble complètement légitime. La conversation médiatique se concentre sur son successeur et un remaniement du gouvernement plutôt que sur le réchauffement climatique. L’ironie est totale.

Après avoir mûrement réfléchi, Nicolas Hulot a démissionné au débotté mardi dernier en direct au micro de France Inter. “Je ne veux plus me mentir” a-t-il dit en parlant de la gravité de la crise et de la fin de l’humanité. Il a expliqué qu’on est en train d’assister à la catastrophe et presque personne, notamment le gouvernement, ne fait rien. Il n’a manifestement pu convaincre la société de l’urgence du problème.

Nommé envoyé spécial pour la protection de la planète par François Hollande, sa nomination au gouvernement Macron semblait donner du poids aux arguments de ce fidèle partisan de l’écologie, connu partout en Francophonie comme l’animateur de l’émission Ushuaïa sur TF1. Hulot, c’est l’équivalent français de l’anglais David Attenborough.

Nicolas Hulot était visiblement ému par son choix Cornélien qui opposait l’impuissance d’achever quoi que ce soit à l’abandon de tout effort à changer la donne. Que va-t-il faire à l’avenir? On ne sait pas. Il affirme que ces ambitions politiques sont terminées. Peut-être va-t-il reprendre les rênes de la Fondation pour la Nature et L’Homme qu’il avait créée en 1990. Quoi qu’il arrive, on peut être sûr qu’il continuera la lutte pour sauver et l’humanité et la planète.

A SERIOUS SETBACK FOR THE GREEN MOVEMENT

Nicolas Hulot’s resignation from his post as Minister for environmental transition and solidarity in Macron’s government seems to be completely justified. The media is concentrating on who will replace him and a cabinet reshuffle rather than talking about climate change. The irony is total.

After a lot of soul-searching, Nicolas Hulot resigned out of the blue last Tuesday, live on the radio station France Inter. “I can’t lie to myself any more” he said, talking about the seriousness of the crisis and the end of humanity. He explained that we are witnessing a catastrophe and hardly anybody, particularly the government, is doing anything. He has signally failed to convince society of the urgency of the problem.

Appointed ‘special envoy for the protection of the planet’ by François Hollande, his inclusion in Macron’s government seemed to strengthen the case of this stalwart of the environment, well-known throughout French-speaking countries as the presenter of the programme Ushuaïa on TF1. Hulot is the French equivalent of the Englishman David Attenborough.

Nicolas Hulot was visibly upset by the ‘choix Cornélien’ (impossible decision) which set his powerlessness to achieve anything against the abandonment of any effort to make radical change. What does the future hold for him ? We don’t know. He insists that he no longer has any political ambitions. He may pick up the reins of the ‘Foundation for Nature & Mankind’ which he founded in 1990. Whatever happens, we can be confident that he’ll keep on fighting to save both humanity and the planet.

LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT

C’est les vacances! Dans les journaux, c’est la saison des serpents de mer et chez les cinéphiles c’est peut-être le moment de se complaire dans la nostalgie. Ceux qui connaissent déjà le film de Jacques Tati peuvent se régaler d’une reprise de ce classique en suivant le lien:

Si vous avez un sens du ridicule et de l’absurde et vous ne l’avez jamais vu, faites vous plaisir, vous n’en serez pas déçu. Vous n’allez pas pouvoir vous empêcher de rire tout haut.

Il s’agit d’un des personnages les plus attachants du cinéma français. Le film en noir et blanc a été tourné en 1953 mais semble chevaucher l’ère du cinéma muet et celui du parlant. Le mime doué Jacques Tati a créé un inadapté indépendant, quelqu’un qui jure avec le monde moderne. On compatit avec lui, en se demandant ce qu’il penserait de la deuxième décennie du vingt-et-unième siècle, si la technologie des années cinquante le tracasse.

On dit que Tati s’est inspiré de son voisin architecte, le grand-père de l’écologiste médiatisé Nicolas Hulot. À son tour, il me semble que le personnage britannique de Mister Bean doit beaucoup à Monsieur Hulot.

Tati a tourné encore quatre films de Monsieur Hulot: Mon oncle (1958), Playtime (1967), Domicile Conjugal (1970) et Trafic (1971).

MR HULOT’S HOLIDAY

It’s holiday time! In the newspapers it’s the silly season and for film-lovers perhaps it’s the moment to wallow in some nostalgia. Those of you who already know Jacques Tati’s film can enjoy another showing of this classic by following the link:

If you have a sense of the ridiculous and the absurd and you’ve never seen it, give yourself a treat, you won’t be disappointed. You won’t be able to stop yourself from laughing out loud.

It’s about one of French cinema’s most appealing characters. The black and white film was shot in 1953 but seems to straddle the silent movie era and the talkies. The talented mime Jacques Tati created an independent misfit, someone who’s at odds with the modern world. You sympathise with him, whilst wondering what he’d think of the second decade of the twenty-first century, if the technology of the nineteen-fifties bothers him.

Tati is supposed to have based the character on his architect neighbour, the grandfather of the environmentalist Nicolas Hulot who’s always in the news. In turn, I think that the British character Mr Bean owes a lot to Monsieur Hulot.

Tati made four further films about Monsieur Hulot: Mon oncle (My uncle)(1958), Playtime (1967), Domicile Conjugal (Marital Home) (1970) andT rafic (1971).

LES PEOPLE AU SECOURS DE LA PLANÈTE

Demander l’aide des people au secours de la planète – ça colle ? On dirait oui à en juger par le battage médiatique autour de la visite de François Hollande aux Philippines vendredi, accompagné de la vedette de cinéma Marion Cotillard.

Ce n’est rien de nouveau. Monsieur Hollande ne fait que suivre l’exemple d’autres présidents français : Aznavour a accompagné Chirac en Arménie, Sophie Marceau faisait partie de l’équipe de vente de Mitterrand des TGV en Corée du Sud. Et, déjà en 2012, Monsieur Hollande a nommé Nicolas Hulot son envoyé spécial pour la protection de la planète.

Marion Cotillard a déjà montré sa crédibilité en matière d’écologie en travaillant avec Greenpeace, donc on ne doit pas remettre en question sa sincérité ni devoir justifier sa présence à cet appel de Manille. L’actu people compte bien des fidèles et si cette visite contribue à une sensibilisation du peuple à l’urgence de la situation, en avant la musique !

Selon un sondage récent de l’Insitut Odoxa, seulement 1% des Français pensent que l’écologie est une priorité. Du chemin à faire quand même …

CELEBRITIES SAVING THE PLANET

Enlisting the help of celebrities to save the planet – does it make sense ? You’d think so if the media frenzy around François Hollande’s visit to the Philippines on Friday in the company of film star Marion Cotillard is anything to go by.

It’s not a new idea. Mr Hollande is only following the example of other French presidents: Aznavour went with Chirac to Armenia, Sophie Marceau was part of Mitterrand’s TGV sales team to South Korea. And, back in 2012, Mr Hollande appointed Nicolas Hulot as his special envoy for the protection of the planet.

Marion Cotillard has already shown her green credentials in her work with Greenpeace, so her sincerity oughtn’t to be called into question nor should we need to justify her presence at this ‘Manilla call for action’. Celebrity news has a lot of faithful followers and if this visit contributes to raising people’s awareness of the urgency of the situation, full steam ahead!

According to a recent poll by the Odoxa Institute, only 1% of French people think that the environment is a priority. There’s a long way to go ….

LES DEUX MESSIEURS HULOT

Les discussions et les discours des participants à la conférence de l’ONU de Doha sur le changement climatique ne tiennent pas vraiment les manchettes. Alors qui mieux que Nicolas Hulot pour être nommé l’envoyé spécial du Président de la République pour la protection de la planète ?

On ne sait pas pendant combien de temps Monsieur Hollande s’est pressé le citron avant de choisir cette célébrité, connu partout en Francophonie en raison de son programme Ushuaïa sur TF1. Mais le florilège des écolos français disponibles et prêts à accepter cette honneur douteux en tant que bénévole n’a pas pu être long.

La mission de Nicolas Hulot est simple : de sensibiliser, d’informer et de mobiliser la communauté internationale sur la crise écologique mondiale et les moyens pour y faire face. Le temps émousse les critiques et on a oublié la plupart de ses détracteurs qui le présentaient comme surmédiatisé et critiquaient son acceptation de l’argent sale de la part des grandes entreprises les plus polluantes.

On dit que c’était le grand-père de Nicolas qui a inspiré le personnage du protagoniste du célèbre film de Jacques Tati sorti en 1953 : Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot. Certains disent que le petit-fils suit le même chemin : bien intentionné mais maladroit. À la fin du film, les vacanciers repartent sans que rien d’important ne se soit passé. Espérons que Monsieur Hulot junior aura plus d’impact.

THE TWO MISTER HULOTS

The speeches and discussions of participants at the UN Doha climate conference aren’t exactly hitting the headlines. So who better than Nicolas Hulot to be nominated as the French President’s special envoy for the protection of the planet ?

We don’t know how long Mr Hollande agonised over the choice of this celebrity, known throughout the French-speaking world because of his TF1 programme ‘Ushuaïa’. But the list of the top environmentalists available and ready to accept this dubious honour as a volunteer couldn’t have been a long one.

Hulot’s mission is simple: to raise awareness, inform and mobilise the international community about the worldwide environmental crisis and ways of tackling it. Memory is short and those who criticised him for being over-exposed in the media and for accepting dirty money from the most polluting big businesses are mostly forgotten.

Apparently Nicolas’ grandfather was the inspiration for the main character in Jacques Tati’s famous 1953 film: Mr Hulot’s Holiday. Some say that the grandson is turning out the same way: well meaning but clumsy. At the end of the film, the holidaymakers leave without anything of importance having happened. Let’s hope that Mr Hulot junior will have a bigger impact.
