ARSÈNE LUPIN, GENTLEMAN CAMBRIOLEUR

Petit poisson deviendra grand … Quand il a publié dans le journal L’Auto en 1904 un conte intitulé Un gentleman, Maurice Leblanc n’avait pas la moindre idée du grand succès qu’allait remporter son personnage. Il aurait eu du mal à croire que, plus qu’un siècle plus tard, ce personnage fictif, Arsène Lupin, cartonnait dans une version contemporaine sur Netflix.

L’année suivante, il a développé le personnage pour un feuilleton du magazine d’un ami, Pierre Lafitte, Je sais tout. Appelé à l’origine Arsène Lopin, l’auteur a dû changer le nom suite aux protestations d’un politique du même nom. Son succès était peut-être dû au style simple qui exposait très clairement des choses compliquées. Le premier roman Arsène Lupin gentleman cambrioleur a été suivi de 18 romans, 39 nouvelles et 5 pièces de théâtre.

Le gentleman cambrioleur est connu pour sa capacité à user de déguisements et de changer d’identité pour commettre ses crimes. Il est devenu célèbre et très recherché y compris par Herlock Sholmes qui n’est jamais parvenu à l’interpeller.

La version 2021 de Lupin poursuit parfaitement la tradition de l’original. Omar Sy (inoubliable dans le film Les Intouchables) tient le rôle éponyme.

Les téléspectateurs britanniques ont actuellement l’embarras du choix en matière de séries françaises disponibles avec, en plus de Lupin, la huitième et dernière série d’Engrenages sur BBC 4 et Dix Pour Cent sur Netflix.

Tall oaks from little acorns grow … When he published a story entitled “A Gentleman” in the magazine “L’Auto” (The Car) in 1904, Maurice Leblanc had no inkling of the huge success his character was going to have. He’d have been amazed, more than a century later, that this fictitious character Arsène Lupin was such a hit in a contemporary version on Netflix.

The following year, he developed the character for a serial in a friend Pierre Lafitte’s magazine “Je sais tout” (I know everything). Originally called Arsène Lopin, the author had to change the name following protests from a politician of the same name. His success was perhaps due to the simple style which explained complicated things very clearly. The first novel “Arsène Lupin gentleman cambrioleur” (Arsène Lupin gentleman burglar) was followed by a further 18 novels, 39 short stories and 5 plays.

The gentleman burglar is well-known for his ability to make use of disguises and to change his identity in order to commit his crimes. He became famous and a wanted man, including by Herlock Sholmes who never managed to question him.

The 2021 version of Lupin perfectly follows the tradition of the original. Omar Sy (unforgettable in the film “Les Intouchables” (The Untouchables), plays the title role.

British television viewers are currently spoilt for choice as regards French series available with, as well as Lupin, the eighth and final series of “Engrenages” (Spiral) on BBC4 and “Dix Pour Cent” (10% – Call My Agent) on Netflix.
