LES STARS SE COUPENT LES CHEVEUX

Elles sont une cinquantaine d’actrices et de chanteuses françaises qui se sont coupé les cheveux en soutien aux femmes iraniennes. Mahsa Amini, une femme de 22 ans, a été arrêté par la police des moeurs pour avoir porté le voile de manière inappropriée. Ensuite elle est morte.

À l’initiative de trois avocats, dont Julie Couturier, la bâtonnière de Paris, les grands noms féminins du monde du cinéma et de la chanson ont sorti leurs ciseaux.

Dans une vidéo diffusée sur Internet la semaine dernière, ces stars engagées se sont filmées en train de se couper les cheveux. Une brochette de célébrités qui ont voulu démontrer leur solidarité avec les manifestantes en Iran, suite à la mort de la jeune femme. La vidéo est devenue virale sur les réseaux sociaux.

Sur le compte Instagram Soutien femmes Iran, on voit Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, Isabelle Adjani, Isabelle Huppert, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julie Gayet et j’en passe. En fond musical, on entend la reprise de la chanson italienne Bella Ciao, chantée en persan par l’Iranienne Gandom, devenue un hymne de la révolte.

STARS CUT THEIR HAIR

There are about fifty French actresses and singers who’ve cut their hair in support of Iranian women. Mahsa Amini, a 22 year old woman, was arrested by the morality police for wearing the veil in an inappropriate way. Then she died.

On the initiative of three lawyers, including Julie Couturier, president of the Paris bar, big female names from the world of cinema and song got their scissors out.

In a video broadcast on the Internet last week, these committed stars filmed themselves cutting their hair. A whole bunch of celebrities who wanted to show their solidarity with demonstrators in Iran, following the death of the young woman. The video has gone viral on social networks.

On the Instagram account ‘Soutien Femmes Iran’ (‘Hair for Freedom’), you can see Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, Isabelle Adjani, Isabelle Huppert, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julie Gayet and many more. The background music you can hear is a cover of the Italian song ‘Bella Ciao’ sung in Persian by the Iranian Gandom, which has become an anthem of the rebellion.

L’APPRENTI DU BOULANGER

Non, il ne s’agit ni d’un poème, ni d’une symphonie, ni d’un film d’Hollywood. C’est une histoire que je trouve à la fois réconfortante et inquiétante. Réconfortante car, pour les individus concernés, il y a une fin heureuse, mais inquiétante car ils n’auraient jamais dû se trouver dans cette position peu enviable.

Un boulanger de Besançon, Stéphane Ravacley, avait embauché en apprentissage Laye Fodé Traoré, un jeune immigrant de Guinée qui en avait bavé. Le jeune homme, qui a vite maîtrisé le français, venait d’avoir 18 ans et était donc menacé d’expulsion. Son patron, pas d’accord avec cette situation, et malgré une santé fragile (il a fait trois embolies pulmonaires) n’a vu qu’un seul moyen de la remédier: une grève de la faim.

Une pétition a été signée par plus de 240 000 personnes et une tribune du Nouvel Observateur, de la part de plusieurs célébrités (dont le journaliste et eurodéputé Raphaël Glucksmann, l’actrice Marion Cotillard, l’acteur Omar Sy, la romancière Leila Slimani et le philosophe Edgar Morin), a appelé le président de la République à aider le boulanger bisontin et son apprenti. Après 10 jours, pendant lesquels le boulanger a continué de travailler, le combat est gagné. Régularisé depuis le 14 janvier, Laye a repris le travail.

Comme dit Stéphane dans cette vidéo: Ce n’est pas à moi de faire réfléchir les gens. Pourtant, il souhaite travailler sur un texte de loi qui puisse protéger les jeunes comme Laye jusqu’à obtention d’un diplôme ou d’un cursus scolaire quel que soit leur âge. Que dit Laye? THE BAKER’S APPRENTICE

No, it’s not a poem, a symphony or a Hollywood film It’s a story which I find both heartwarming and worrying. Heartwarming as, for the individuals concerned, it has a happy ending, but worrying as they should never have found themselves in this invidious position.

A Besançon baker, Stéphane Ravacley, had taken on an apprentice, Laye Fodé Traoré, a young immigrant from Guinée who had had a hard time. The young man, who quickly learnt to speak French, had just turned 18 and was therefore threatened with expulsion. His boss, who opposed this situation and despite his own fragile health (he’s had three pulmonary embolisms), could only see one way of solving it: a hunger strike.

A petition was signed by more than 240,000 people and a letter in the ‘Nouvel Observateur’ magazine signed by several celebrities (amongst them the journalist and Euro MP Raphaël Glucksmann, the actress Marion Cotillard, the actor Omar Sy, the novelist Leila Slimani and the philosopher Edgar Morin) called on the president to help the baker from Besançon and his apprentice. After 10 days, during which the baker continued to work, the battle was won. His papers in order since 14 January, Laye has gone back to work.

As Stéphane says in this video: “It’s not up to me to make people think”. However, he wants to work on a proposal for a law which will protect young people like Laye until they get a qualification or a place on a degree course, whatever their age. What does Laye say? “I’m proud of my boss and the fight he put up”.

PLUS JAMAIS COMME AVANT?

On dit que la France ne sera plus jamais comme avant après les attentats meurtriers du 13 novembre. Exagération hystérique ou vérité pénible? Les sentiments ressentis par la population sont forts et divers: peur, colère, deuil, fragilité, défiance, xénophobie et j’en passe. Mais les Français sont têtus et ne se laissent pas facilement décourager et il y a aussi de l’espoir: les gens se serrent les coudes au moment où leurs libertés publiques sont menacées.

Les citoyens français tiennent depuis longtemps à leur droit de manifester, de descendre dans la rue pour n’importe quelle cause. Quand la marche pour le climat, prévue depuis des mois pour le 29 novembre, a été annulée pour des raisons de sécurité, les manifestants n’ont pas voulu céder. Ils ont voté avec leurs pieds, ou plutôt avec leurs chaussures.

Depuis dimanche, des milliers de chaussures recouvrent la place de la République à Paris, d’où la marche devait partir. montrant la détermination des gens ordinaires à exprimer leur point de vue et à être écoutés.

Des chaussons de bébé aux côtés de baskets remplis de fleurs, des chaussures à talons hauts d’anonymes côtoyant les chaussures de sport du secrétaire général de l’ONU Ban Ki-Moon et les bottines de l’actrice Marion Cotillard. Il paraît que même le pape François en a envoyé une paire.

La France a été ébranléee par les événements récents, mais c’est une nation fière qui va refuser d’être écrasé par ce revers récent. Si la conférence COP21 arrive à concrétiser quelque chose d’importance reste à voir …

NEVER THE SAME AGAIN?

They say France will never be the same again after the murderous attacks of 13 November. An exaggeration or a difficult truth? The emotions felt by the population are strong and diverse: fear, anger, mourning, fragility, defiance, xenophobia and more besides. But the French aren’t easily put off and there’s hope too with people pulling together even as their public freedoms are threatened.

French citizens have long held dear their right to demonstrate, to go out on the streets for whatever cause. When the climate march, planned months ago for the 29 November, was cancelled for security reasons, the demonstrators didn’t want to give up. They voted with their feet, or rather, their shoes.

Since Sunday, thousands of shoes have covered the Place de la République in Paris, from where the march was due to begin, showing ordinary people’s determination to express their point of view and to be heard.

Babies bootees alongside trainers filled with flowers, unknown people’s high heels next to UN Secretary Gerneral Ban Ki-Moon’s running shoes and Marion Cotillard’s ankle boots. Apparently even Pope Francis sent a pair.

France has been shaken by recent events, but it’s a proud country and it’ll take more than this recent setback to crush it. Whether the COP21 conference manages to achieve anything important remains to be seen …

DEUX JOURS, UNE NUIT

On me demande souvent si je connais des films français qui sont assez faciles à comprendre. J’en ai vu un récemment. Il s’agit de Deux Jours, Une Nuit, réalisé par les frères Dardenne et avec pour vedette Marion Cotillard.

L’intrigue est simple. Sandra rentre à son travail dans une entreprise de fabrication de panneaux solaires après une crise de dépression. Elle trouve que le patron a offert un choix à ses collègues : une prime de 1000 euros chacun et Sandra sera licenciée ou Sandra garde son emploi. Sandra passe le week-end à visiter ses collègues pour les convaincre de voter pour elle. L’absence d’un syndicat pour la représenter est flagrant.

C’est un film qui fait réfléchir. Sandra est mortifiée de devoir mendier de son avenir et l’actrice trouve le ton juste. Son interprétation est un tour de force qui a bien mérité sa nomination pour meilleure actrice aux Oscars.

Le dialogue n’est pas sans arrêt et Marion Cotillard articule bien. L’histoire se déroule en Belgique et j’ai repéré un seul belgicisme : septante-cinq au lieu de soixante-quinze. Peut-être il y en avait d’autres ?

TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT

I’m often asked if I know any French films which are quite easy to understand. I saw one recently. It was ‘Two Days, One Night’, directed by the Dardenne brothers and starring Marion Cotillard.

The plot is simple. Sandra goes back to work in a solar panel factory after a bout of depression. She finds that the boss has offered her workmates a choice: a 1000 euro bonus for each of them and Sandra will be let go or Sandra keeps her job. Sandra psends the weekend visiting her co-workers to persuade them to vote for her. A trade union is conspicuous by its absence.

It’s a thought-provoking film. Sandra is mortified to have to beg for her future and the actress strikes just the right note. Her performance is a tour de force which was worthy of its Oscar nomination for best actress.

The dialogue is not non-stop and Marion Cotillard enunciates clearly. The story takes place in Belgium and I did notice one Belgicism: ‘septante-cinq’ instead of ‘soixante-quinze’, Maybe there were more?

LES PEOPLE AU SECOURS DE LA PLANÈTE

Demander l’aide des people au secours de la planète – ça colle ? On dirait oui à en juger par le battage médiatique autour de la visite de François Hollande aux Philippines vendredi, accompagné de la vedette de cinéma Marion Cotillard.

Ce n’est rien de nouveau. Monsieur Hollande ne fait que suivre l’exemple d’autres présidents français : Aznavour a accompagné Chirac en Arménie, Sophie Marceau faisait partie de l’équipe de vente de Mitterrand des TGV en Corée du Sud. Et, déjà en 2012, Monsieur Hollande a nommé Nicolas Hulot son envoyé spécial pour la protection de la planète.

Marion Cotillard a déjà montré sa crédibilité en matière d’écologie en travaillant avec Greenpeace, donc on ne doit pas remettre en question sa sincérité ni devoir justifier sa présence à cet appel de Manille. L’actu people compte bien des fidèles et si cette visite contribue à une sensibilisation du peuple à l’urgence de la situation, en avant la musique !

Selon un sondage récent de l’Insitut Odoxa, seulement 1% des Français pensent que l’écologie est une priorité. Du chemin à faire quand même …

CELEBRITIES SAVING THE PLANET

Enlisting the help of celebrities to save the planet – does it make sense ? You’d think so if the media frenzy around François Hollande’s visit to the Philippines on Friday in the company of film star Marion Cotillard is anything to go by.

It’s not a new idea. Mr Hollande is only following the example of other French presidents: Aznavour went with Chirac to Armenia, Sophie Marceau was part of Mitterrand’s TGV sales team to South Korea. And, back in 2012, Mr Hollande appointed Nicolas Hulot as his special envoy for the protection of the planet.

Marion Cotillard has already shown her green credentials in her work with Greenpeace, so her sincerity oughtn’t to be called into question nor should we need to justify her presence at this ‘Manilla call for action’. Celebrity news has a lot of faithful followers and if this visit contributes to raising people’s awareness of the urgency of the situation, full steam ahead!

According to a recent poll by the Odoxa Institute, only 1% of French people think that the environment is a priority. There’s a long way to go ….
