SECOND OU DEUXIÈME TOUR?

La campagne de l’entre-deux-tours bat son plein et les Français retourneront aux urnes dimanche prochain. Les deux candidats restants après le premier tour (Marine Le Pen du Rassemblement National (RN) et le président sortant Emmanuel Macron du parti En Marche) essaient de trouver leur second souffle.

Quand on parle des deux tours, faut-il dire ‘second’ ou ‘deuxième’? En fait on entend les deux, mais, il y a une différence subtile entre les deux. Quand on parle d’une liste de deux éléments, ‘second’ est le mot juste. Mais quand il y a une série de plus de deux éléments, on dit deuxième. Donc, à proprement parler, on doit dire ‘le second tour’.

Ceux qui ont voté soit pour un ou une autre candidat(e), soit se sont abstenus, doivent reporter leur allégéance ou s’abstenir encore une fois. Ou peut-être voter ‘blanc’. Si voter est un droit mais aussi un devoir civique, le vote blanc est un acte citoyen qui vous donne la possibilité d’exprimer votre souhait de quelque chose de différent, en rejetant tous les candidats qui se sont présentés. Pour beaucoup de gens, voter au deuxième tour représente le devoir, entre deux maux, de choisir le moindre.

Le débat télévisé de l’entre-deux-tours entre Emmanuel Macron et Marine Le Pen se déroulera mercredi. Les deux candidats restants vont se heurter de front mercredi soir sur France 2 et TF1 à 21 h. Espérons que ni l’un ni l’autre ne sera dans un état second après leurs semaines de campagne.

À propos: ne pas oublier la différence importante entre la tour et le tour. Le mot féminin signifie un grand bâtiment et le mot masculin signifie une promenade, une partie ou une course comme le célèbre Tour de France de cyclisme.

SECOND OU DEUXIÈME TOUR?

The period between the two ballots is in full swing and the French people will go to the polls again next Sunday. The two candidates remaining after the first round (Marine Le Pen of the National Rally party (RN) and the outgoing president Emmanuel Macron of the En Marche party) are trying to get second wind.

When talking about the two rounds, should one say ‘second’ or ‘deuxième’? Actually you hear both, but there is a subtle difference between the two. When talking about a list with two items, ‘second’ is the right word. But when there’s a series of more than two items, you say ‘deuxième. So, strictly speaking, we should say ‘le second tour’ (the second round).

People who voted either for another candidate or abstained, have to switch allegiance or abstain again. Or maybe vote ‘blank’ . If voting is a right but also a civic duty, the blank vote is an act of citizenship which allows you to express your desire for something different by rejecting all the available candidates. For many people, voting in the second round means they have a duty to choose the lesser of two evils.

The televised between the ballots debate between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will take place on Wednesday. The two remaining candidates will come up against each other on Wednesday evening on France 2 and TF1 at 9.00 pm. Let’s hope that neither candidate will be in a daze after their weeks of campaigning.

By the way: don’t forget the big difference between ‘la tour’ and ‘le tour’. The feminine word means a high building and the masculine word means a tour, a round or a race like the famous Tour de France cycle race.

PANAME

Un seul sujet a tenu les manchettes ces derniers jours: les Panama Papers.Tandis que les médias britanniques se concentrent, on le comprend, sur l’implication de David Cameron dans l’affaire, ce sont les activités des proches de Marine Le Pen et le patrimoine de son père qui intéressent les journalistes français, ainsi que la découverte de l’identité du propriétaire d’un Modigliani qui aurait été spolié pendant la seconde Guerre Mondiale. Aussi, il paraît que la plupart des milliers de français impliqués sont des citoyens lambda.

Le mot Paname évoque aussi le scandale du XIXe siècle, c’est-à-dire l’affaire de corruption liée à la construction du canal du Panama. Là aussi, plusieurs hommes politiques et industriels étaient impliqués et des centaines de milliers de petits investisseurs ont été ruinés.

Paname c’est aussi un surnom familier de Paris et sa banlieue. Au début du XXe siècle, les Parisiens se sont engoués pour les chapeaux de paille ‘panama’, mis en vogue par les travailleurs qui creusaient le canal américain. Porté à l’origine pour se protéger du soleil, le panama est devenu un symbole d’élégance et synonyme de la capitale.

Paname est aussi le titre d’une chanson de Léo Ferré, un des titres les plus célèbres de son album du même nom.

PANAMA

There’s been only one subject hitting the headlines over the last few days: the Panama Papers. Whereas the British media are concentrating, understandably, on David Cameron’s involvement, it’s the activities of people close to Marine Le Pen and her father’s holdings which are of interest to French journalists, along with the identification of the owner of a Modigliani said to have been stolen during the second World War. Also, apparently most of the thousands of French people implicated are ordinary citizens.

The word ‘Panama’ also brings to mind the scandal of the 19th century, i.e. the corruption linked with the construction of the Panama Canal. There too, politicians and industrialists were involved and hundreds of thousands of small investors were ruined.

‘Paname’ is also a familiar nickname for Paris and its suburbs. In the early 20th century, there was a craze amongst Parisians for panama straw hats, made fashionable by the workers who were digging the American canal. Originally worn as protection against the sun, the panama became a symbol of elegance and synonymous with the capital.

Paname is also the title of a song by Léo Ferré, one of the most famous tracks on his album of the same name.

QUELLE CATASTROPHE!

Une prophétie autoréalisatrice ? Pas totalement, cette émission présentée par Robert Peston vendredi soir sur BBC2, mais une occasion ratée quand même.

Peston a réussi à nous montrer une autre France, une France en désaccord avec celle de nos vacances estivales : Hayange, l’ancien centre de la sidérurgie lorraine, privée de ses usines, avec un taux de chômage très élevé, et où on a élu un maire du Front National (au fait,  par la suite, déclaré inéligible à cause d’irrégularités dans ses comptes de campagne).

Son interview avec Marine le Pen n’était pas approfondie. Cependant, elle s’est montrée compétente, répondant au pied levé d’une manière raisonnée et énergique. Peston a constaté que si le Front National arrive au pouvoir et si la France sort de l’Union européenne, il y aurait de graves conséquences pour le Royaume-Uni. Mais, à ma grande déception, il n’a pas expliqué quelles seraient ces conséquences.

Un divertissement léger et agréable mais, malheureusement, superficiel. La plus grande surprise était que Robert Peston semblait parler assez bien français. Chapeau !

WHAT A CATASTROPHE !

A self-fulfilling prophecy ? Not completely, this programme presented by Robert Peston on Friday evening on BBC2, but a missed opportunity all the same.

Peston succeeding in showing us a different France, a France at odds with the one we know from our summer holidays: Hayange, the former centre of the French steel-making industry, deprived  of its factories, with a very high unemployment rate, and where a Front National mayor was elected (by the way, he was subsequently declared ineligible because of irregularities in his campaign accounts).

His interview with Marine le Pen was not in-depth. However, she showed herself to be competent, responding instantly in a sensible and forceful way.

Peston stated that if the Front National comes to power and if France leaves the European Union, there would be serious consequences for the United Kingdom. But, disappointingly, he didn’t explain what these consequences would be.

Light and enjoyable entertainment, but ,unfortunately, superficial. The biggest surprise was that Robert Peston seemed to speak quite good French. Good on him!

MERCI POUR CE MOMENT

Ça fait belle lurette qu’un livre fait une telle sensation. Le titre ironique des mémoires de Valérie Trierweiler, ex-compagne de François Hollande, donne le ton de cette collection de petits potins privés qui n’ont pas grand-chose à voir avec la politique française. Paraît-il. Je dois avouer que je ne l’ai pas lu, et je n’en ai pas envie.

On attendait mieux de quelqu’un qui est journaliste de profession. Personne ne s’étonne qu’elle prenne le chou à son ex-compagnon, mais mieux vaut laver le linge sale en famille. Madame Trierweiler a dû être touchée au vif par cette trahison,  mais un silence peut parfois en dire plus que des mots.

Menée en bateau par le Président de la République qui s’accroche au pouvoir malgré son impopularité dans les sondages, on a l’impression que, dans ce livre, Madame Trierweiler se venge et essaie de redorer son blason. Dire pis que pendre n’est pas digne de la dame qui a été pendant une courte lune de miel la première dame de France.

Certains libraires indépendants refusent de vendre le livre décrit par Marine Le Pen comme ‘un déshonneur pour la France’. Et pourtant, il se vend bien. Si ça vous chante ou vous voulez simplement savoir ce que c’est que toute cette histoire, le livre est disponible en broché au prix de 20 euros.

 

 

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY

It’s been a long time since a book has caused such a sensation. The sarcastic title of the memoirs of Valérie Trierweiler, ex-partner of François Hollande, sets the tone of this kiss-and-tell collection which hasn’t got much to do with French politics. So it seems. I must admit I haven’t read it and don’t want to.

Better was expected of someone who’s a journalist by profession. Nobody’s surprised that she’s annoyed with her ex-partner, but it’s better to wash your dirty linen in private. Madame Trierweiler must have been  really hurt by this betrayal, but sometimes silence speaks louder than words.

Taken for a ride by the French President who is clinging on to power despite his unpopularity in the polls, you feel that Madame Trierweiler is having her revenge  and trying to repair her image. Slagging people off is not worthy of the woman who, during a short honeymoon period, was the First Lady of France.

Some independent booksellers are refusing to sell the book described by Marine le Pen as ‘a dishonour for France’. And yet it’s selling well. If it appeals to you or you simply want to find out what all the fuss is about, the book’s available in paperback price 20 euros.
