Déjà la mascotte du magazine Elle à l’âge de 15 ans, c’était en 1956 qu’elle a obtenu la renommée internationale grâce au film de Roger Vadim Et Dieu créa la femme. D’autres grands films se sont succédé: Le Mépris réalisé par Jean-Luc Godard en 1963 et Viva Maria en 1965 avec Louis Malle comme réalisateur.
En 1977, les photos emblématiques de BB avec un bébé phoque dans les bras ont eu un retentissement mondial. BB a vendu ses bijoux et d’autres effets personnels pour financer ses campagnes et ses activités. Elle a lancé la Fondation Brigitte Bardot à Saint-Tropez en 1986. En 1991 elle a donné sa propriété La Madrague à la Fondation, afin de la faire reconnaître d’utilité publique. Pour elle, les actes valent plus que la parole.
Qu’est-ce que BB pense de l’être humain? “J’ai un bilan assez négatif de l’opinion que j’ai de l’être humain” a-t-elle dit. Et que pense-t-elle des animaux? “Par contre, je n’ai jamais été déçu par les animaux et c’est pour ça que je leur ai dédié ma deuxième partie d’existence”. On ne peut qu’être d’accord avec elle. À 88 ans, elle est toujours un personnage-clé du mouvement des droits des animaux.

She worked hard during her 21-year career. In 1973 she threw in the towel to become an animal rights activist, an even harder job.

In 1977, the iconic photographs of BB with a baby seal in her arms had a worldwide impact. BB sold her jewels and other personal effects to finance her campaigns and activities. She founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in Saint-Tropez in 1986. In 1991 she gave her property ‘La Madrague’ to the foundation in order to get state approval for it. She certainly puts her money where her mouth is.
What does BB think of human beings? “My assessment of human beings is pretty negative” she said. And what does she think of animals? “On the other hand, I’ve never been disappointed by animals and that’s why I’ve dedicated the second part of my life to them”. You can’t argue with that. At age 88, she’s still a key figure in the animal rights movement.
