UNE NOUVELLE MANIÈRE DE TRAVERSER LA MANCHE

Vous voulez traverser la Manche cet automne? Si vous avez l’esprit pionnier et aventurier et vous êtes quelqu’un qui essaie d’agir d’une manière écoresponsable, le nouveau ferry trans-Manche SailLink pourrait vous intéresser. Le bateau est réservé aux passagers piétons et aux cyclistes, car il s’agit en fait d’un catamaran à voile.

La phase pilote va prendre les vagues entre Douvres et Boulogne-sur-Mer le 10 septembre, la date du début de la prochaine grande action d’Extinction Rébellion (Une coïncidence peut-être, j’en sais rien). La durée de la traversée variera entre 3h30min et 4h30min selon les marées.

Le premier bateau de SailLink est adapté d’un catamaran existant mais l’entreprise espère dessiner un vaisseau à haute performance spécialement conçu. Une deuxième route entre Ramsgate et Dunkerque est prévue pour 2024 et une route challenge en 2025 entre Newhaven et Dieppe.

Quand la jeune écolo Greta Thunberg a bravé vents et marées en traversant l’Atlantique en 2019 pour se rendre à la conférence du climat des Nations Unies, elle a avoué que le voyage en catamaran était difficile, car la mer était souvent agitée. Mais la Manche est une mer plutôt calme et ce court voyage ne devrait pas vous déranger trop, même si vous avez un peu de mal de mer. Sa grande flottabilité rend un catamaran presque insubmersible.

C’est un premier pas dans la bonne direction pour transformer le tourisme, une des industries les plus destructrices de l’environnement. Il sera intéressant de voir si ça décolle (pour ainsi dire).

A NEW WAY OF CROSSING THE CHANNEL

Do you want to cross the Channel this autumn? If you have a pioneering, adventurous spirit and you’re someone who is trying to behave in a green way, the new cross-Channel ferry SailLink might be of interest to you. The boat is only for foot passengers and cyclists as it is in fact a catamaran.

The pilot phase will take to the waves between Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer on 10th September, the date of the next big Extinction Rebellion action (A coincidence perhaps, I really don’t know). The crossing time will vary between 3h30min and 4h30min depending on the tides.

SailLink’s first boat has been adapted from an existing catamarn, but the company hopes to design a high performance purpose-built vessel. A second route between Ramsgate and Dunkirk is planned for 2024 and a challenge route in 2025 between Newhaven and Dieppe.

When the young environmentalist Greta Thunberg braved the winds and the seas to cross the Atlantic in 2019 to go to the UN climate conference, she admitted that it was a tough journey as the sea was often rough. But the Channel is a calmer sea and this short journey shouldn’t upset you too much, even if you suffer from sea sickness. It’s extreme buoyancy makes a catamaran virtually unsinkable.

It’s a good first step in the right direction to transform tourism, one of the most environmentally destructive industries. It will be interesting to see if it takes off (so to speak).

LES BLABLABLA CAISSES

Non, ça n’a rien à voir avec Greta Thunberg. Il s’agit en fait d’une tentative de la part de certains supermarchés d’apaiser les clients au moyen d’un peu de papotage.

Vous en avez marre des caissier.es qui passent silencieusement vos achats à leurs bornes à la vitesse de la lumière, vous laissant paniqué au moment de payer? Vous habitez seul et vous vous sentez isolé, bien prêt à causer avec quelqu’un, même un étranger? Eh bien, la blablabla caisse vous attend.

Depuis la mi-janvier au magasin Carrefour du centre commercial de Villiers-en-Bière (Seine-et-Marne), le plus grand hypermarché du groupe, on vient de mettre en place une caisse signalée par une affiche. Vous y passez si vous voulez tailler une bavette avec la caissière. Ça doit permettre d’éviter la frustration des clients suivants qui sont pressés et s’énervent quand une conversation est entamée.

Après un premier essai par Carrefour à Dijon en 2019 avant le confinement, d’autres enseignes comme Système U et Auchan suivent l’exemple. On dit que l’idée originale vient des Pays-Bas. Mais enfin, vraiment? Sur les marchés, dans les épiceries qui ont précédé les supermarchés et dans la plupart des petits magasins qui survivent malgré l’assaut de la grande distribution, on se donne toujours la peine de vous parler.

Espérons que l’ambiance morose de beaucoup de supermarchés est derrière nous. La sociabilité ne coute rien et ça nous remonte le moral. Vive les blablabla caisses!

CHAT CHECKOUTS

No, it’s nothing to do with Greta Thunberg. In fact it’s an attempt on the part of certain supermarkets to soothe customers with a bit of chitchat.

Are you fed up with checkout operators who silently scan your purchases at the speed of light, leaving you in a panic when you’ve got to pay? Do you live alone and feel isolated, happy to talk with someone, even a stranger? Well, the chat checkout awaits you.

Since the middle of January at the Carrefour shop at the Villiers-en-Bière (Seine-et-Marne) shopping centre, the biggest hypermarket of the group, they’ve just installed a special checkout. You go through there if you want to have a natter with the cashier. It’s supposed to avoid frustration for other customers who are in a rush and get worked up when people start to have a conversation.

After an initial trial by Carrefour in Dijon in 2019 before the lockdown, other supermarkets like Système U and Auchan are following suit. Apparently the original idea comes from the Netherlands. Really? In markets, in the grocery stores which preceded supermarkets and in most small shops which are surviving despite the onslaught of large-scale outlets, people were always happy to give you the time of day.

Let’s hope that the gloomy atmosphere of a lot of supermarkets is a thing of the past. Being sociable doesn’t cost anything and it does cheer us up. Long live the chat checkouts!

UNE ADO PAS COMMODE

L’événement BD de l’année est incontestablement la sortie jeudi dernier du 38e album des aventures d’Astérix, La fille de Vercingétorix, avec une adolescente pas commode comme héroïne.

Le livre a un tirage sans équivalent dans le monde de l’édition française de 5 millions d’exemplaires, en quinze langues dans une trentaine de pays. Il est d’ores et déjà assuré d’être le livre le plus vendu en France en 2019.

L’ado vedette du nouvel album s’appelle Adrénaline et elle rêve qu’un autre monde est possible. L’auteur Jean-Yves Ferri assure que sa ressemblance à la jeune icône suédoise de la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique, Greta Thunberg, est “un pur hasard”, mais, comme d’habitude, les références à l’actualité sont nombreuses. Un échange entre deux jeunes amis d’Adrénaline, Blinix et Selfix, affirme que, pour trouver un boulot, il n’y a que “la rue à traverser”, une phrase qui résonne d’une manière troublante des paroles d’Emmanuel Macron.

L’initiateur de la série Astérix, René Goscinny (décédé en 1977), l’a créée avec l’illustrateur Albert Uderzo. Astérix a vu le jour dans la revue franco-belge de BD Pilote en 1959. Les histoires se passent en 50 av. J.-C. en Gaule, occupée par les Romains.

À noter que les BD Astérix sont pleines de plaisanteries pour les initiés, mais, par contre, pour les apprenants de Français, les livres cultes de la série Le Petit Nicolas de René Goscinny sont facilement compréhensibles, même pour les débutants.

AN AWKWARD TEENAGER

The comic book event of the year is undoubtedly the publication last Thursday of the 38th album of the Adventures of Astérix: “Vercingétorix’s daughter”, with an awkward teenager as the heroine.

The book has a print-run unrivalled in French publishing of 5 million copies, in 15 languages in around 30 countries. It’s already guaranteed to be the best-selling book in France in 2019.

The teenage star of the album is called Adrénaline and she dreams that another world is possible. The author Jean-Yves Ferri claims that her resemblance to the young Swedish icon of the fight against climate change, Greta Thunberg, is “pure chance”, but as usual, there are many references to current events. An exchange between two young friends of Adrénaline, Blinix and Selfix, claims that you only have to “cross the road” to find a job, a phrase with uncanny echoes of Emmanuel Macron’s words.

The originator of the Astérix series, René Goscinny (died in 1977) created it with the illustrator Albert Uderzo. Astérix first saw the light of day in the Franco-Belgian comic strip magazine “Pilote” in 1959. The stories are set in 50 BC in Roman-occupied Gaul.

Note that the Astérix cartoons are full of in-jokes, but, on the other hand, for learners of French, René Goscinny’s cult books in “Le Petit Nicolas” series are easy to understand, even for beginners.

LA VISITE DE GRETA THUNBERG AU PARLEMENT FRANÇAIS

Greta Thunberg, la lycéenne suédoise qui mène la lutte des jeunes contre le réchauffement climatique, viendra à l’Assemblée nationale demain, mardi.

L’égérie du mouvement qui a renoncé aux déplacements en avion et fait grève d’école chaque vendredi devant le parlement suédois, est l’invitée des 162 députés français du collectif Accélérons* pour un débat d’une heure et demie. L’ado a reçu de nombreuses invitations pour s’exprimer devant des parlements et a déja fait un discours devant le parlement européen et au parlement britannique. L’OPEC l’a nommé “la plus grande menace” à l’industrie des combustibles fossiles. Greta leur a remercié du “plus grand compliment”.

À ses côtés interviendront la climatologue française Valérie Masson-Delmotte, vice-présidente du Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC) et coordinatrice du rapport spécial sur la limitation du réchauffement climatique à 1,5°C, ainsi que de jeunes Français engagés pour sauver la planète.

Cependant, plusieurs députés LR (Les Républicains) ne voient pas sa visite de bon oeil. Ils appellent à boycotter la séance et refusent de prêter l’attention à l’ado. Évidemment ils ne sont pas passionnés de parrhesia, ces gens-là.

Dans une interview récente avec Libération, Greta a dit que sa visite chez Emmanuel Macron en mars ne lui a pas donné l’impression que le chef d’État français comprenait l’urgence de la situation. On verra bien si les députés d’Accélerons vont pouvoir la rassurer. Ça m’étonnerait quand même.

GRETA THUNBERG’S VISIT TO THE FRENCH PARLIAMENT

Greta Thunberg, the Swedish schoolgirl who is leading young people’s fight against climate change, will be coming to the French parliament tomorrow, Tuesday.

The movement’s muse who has given up travelling by plane and goes on school strike outside the Swedish parliament every Friday, has been invited by the 162 French MPs of the “Accélérons” (Let’s speed it up) collective for an hour and half’s debate. The teenager has had many invitations to speak in parliaments and has already made a speech to the European parliament and to the UK parliament. OPEC has called her the “biggest threat to the fossil fuel industry”. Greta thanked them for “the biggest compliment”.

She’ll be accompanied by the French climatologist Valérie Masson-Delmotte, vice president of the IPCC (Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change) and coordinator of the special report on limiting climate change to 1.5°C, along with young French people committed to saving the planet.

However, several LR (the Republicans) MPs are not in favour of her visit. They’re calling for a boycott of the session and refuse to give her the time of day. Obviously not fans of speaking truth to power, these people.

In a recent interview for the newspaper Libération, Greta said that her visit to Emmanuel Macron in March didn’t give her the impression that the French head of state understood the urgency of the situation. We’ll see if the “Accélérons” MPs will be able to reassure her. However, I’d be surprised.
