La faculté de chirurgie dentaire de Strasbourg prend les devants dans le domaine de la formation des futurs dentistes.

Vous, les patients, n’êtes pas seuls à avoir de la peur dans le cabinet dentaire. Pour diminuer l’appréhension des jeunes dentistes avant de traiter leurs premiers patients, ils ont maintenant l’occasion d’essayer leurs compétences sur un mannequin hyperréaliste.

Le faux patient, qui a coûté 70.000 euros, respire, cligne des yeux, transpire et parle. C’est le prof qui le manipule à distance et qui observe le comportement de ses étudiants à travers une vitre sans tain.

Les étudiants n’ont pas de mal à apprendre les gestes techniques sur des têtes inertes. Maintenant ils apprennent aussi à avoir de bons rapports avec leurs patients: comment gérer l’anxiété et comment réagir en cas d’événements inhabituels comme la nausée, un malaise ou même un arrêt cardiaque. On filme l’intervention et la retransmet à la classe pour permettre un débriefing.

Cette innovation utile doit aboutir à un nouveau groupe de dentistes assurés. Et vous, les patients, n’auront plus besoin de garder une dent contre eux!

A DUMMY WITH A DIFFERENCE

The Strasbourg university dental school is taking the initiative in the field of training for future dentists.

You, the patients, aren’t the only ones to be frightened in the dental surgery. In order to reduce young dentists’ apprehension before treating their first patients, they are now able to try out their skills on a very realistic dummy.

The fake patient, which cost 70,000 euros, breathes, blinks, sweats and speaks. It’s the teacher who is manipulating it remotely and observing his students’ behaviour via a two-way mirror.

Students don’t have trouble acquiring their technical skills on inert heads. Now they’re also learning how to have a good relationship with their patients: how to deal with anxiety and how to react when something unusual happens such as nausea, fainting or even a heart attack. The treatment is filmed and broadcast to the class for a debriefing.

This useful innovation should result in a new cohort of confident dentists. And you, the patients, will no longer need to bear them any grudges!
