ROLAND-GARROS S’ATTAQUE AU CYBERHARCÈLEMENT

De nos jours, être joueur ou joueuse de tennis professionnel/le réussi/e veut dire mener une vie complètement consacrée à son boulot. L’entraînement, la forme physique, les déplacements dans le monde entier ont souvent un impact négatif sur la santé mentale autant que physique.

Sous la direction d’Amélie Mauresmo, ancien numéro 1 du monde et championne de Wimbledon en 2006, le tournoi de Roland-Garros, a débuté à Paris hier. Pour la première fois, un grand chelem fait face au cyberharcèlement qui est devenu encore un problème pour les participants. Parmi les nombreuses victimes qui s’étaient plaintes: Gaël Monfils, Caroline Garcia et Alizé Cornet qui reçoit régulièrement des messages menaçants de la part de parieurs en ligne après un match perdu.

Cette année on a brisé l’omerta: à Roland-Garros on peut s’abonner à Bodyguard, une appli qui détecte et efface les messages de haine et modère les messages reçus sur les réseaux sociaux par les sportifs de tous les tableaux. “C’est canon pour le bien-être mental des joueurs” a dit Mauresmo “J’ai hâte de voir le ressenti des joueurs sur ce service”.

On pourrait se demander pourquoi on devrait se donner autant de mal, mais félicitations à la Fédération française de tennis d’avoir mis en place ce mécanisme pour s’attaquer au problème. Une autre solution, si vous n’avez pas la peau dure, serait naturellement de vous désabonner des réseaux sociaux. Mais pour les jeunes d’aujourd’hui ça ne paraît pas réalisable et il est probable que leurs contrats de parrainage insistent sur une présence sur ces médias qui dominent la société.

ROLAND-GARROS TAKES ON CYBERBULLYING

Nowadays, to be a successful professional tennis player means leading a life completely dedicated to your work. Practising, physical fitness, travelling all around the world often have a negative effect on players’ mental as well as physical health.

Under director Amélie Mauresmo, former world number 1 and Wimbledon champion in 2006, the Roland-Garros tournament began in France yesterday. For the first time, a grand slam is taking on cyberbullying which has become yet another problem for the players. Amongst the many victims who have been complaining: Gaël Monfils, Caroline Garcia and Alizé Cornet who regularly receives threatening messages from online gamblers after she loses a match.

This year the code of silence has been broken: at Roland-Garros you can subscribe to Bodyguard, an app which detects and deletes hate messages and moderates the messages received on social meida by the players in all the draws. “It’s fantastic for the mental wellbeing of the players” said Mauresmo “I’m keen to see what the players feel about this service”.

You might ask yourself why they should have to go to such lengths, but congrats to The French tennis federation for having put this mechanism in place to tackle the problem. Another solution, if you aren’t thick-skinned, would of course be to cancel your social media accounts. But for today’s young people this doesn’t seem feasible and probably their sponsorship contracts insist on their presence on the media which dominate society.

COUP D’ENVOI DE LA COUPE DU MONDE DE FOOT

Hier on a vu le premier match du tournoi de 2022, une victoire pour l’Équateur contre le pays hôte controversé du Qatar, qui fait face à de nombreuses critiques, notamment le traitement des travailleurs migrants, la place des femmes et des minorités LGBT dans la société et l’empreinte environnementale de l’événement.

Emmanuel Macron a déclaré la semaine dernière qu’il ne fallait pas politiser le sport et qu’il faut se poser les questions politiques au bon moment. Dans une certaine mesure, il a raison. Il est trop tard pour changer de lieu à la veille des championnats. Il a annoncé par ailleurs qu’il se rendra au Qatar si les bleus atteignent les demi-finales. Une victoire sportive ne fait jamais de mal à la cote de popularité d’un président.

Entretemps, les maires des villes françaises se trouvent dans l’embarras. Certains, comme Michaël Delafosse, le maire (PS) de Montpellier, qualifient le choix du Qatar comme désastreux, même ubuesque. Comme Paris, Marseille, Lille, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Reims et bien d’autres, Montpellier va boycotter la compétition: il n’y aura pas de grands écrans installés dans les places de la ville pour retransmettre les matchs. Vérité au deçà des Pyrénées, erreur au delà.

Mais, comme a dit Voltaire, le malheur des uns fait le bonheur des autres. Les bars qui auront installé un grand écran (ou même un petit) seront probablement bondés et les propriétaires contents de l’occasion de récupérer une partie de ce qu’ils ont perdu pendant la pandémie. D’autres villes, comme Nice, Cannes et Perpignan ménagent la chèvre et le chou en indiquant qu’ils vont diffuser sur des écrans géants des rencontres au Qatar “en fonction des résultats” de l’équipe de France.

Qui sortira gagnant sur le terrain du Mondial, on n’en sait rien. Ce qui semble plus sûr c’est que les travailleurs migrants, les minorités et l’environnement seront les grands perdants. Pour le moment, le foot tient les manchettes, la COP27 ratée est déjà oubliée.

FOOTBALL WORLD CUP KICKS OFF

Yesterday saw the first match in the 2022 tournament, a victory for Ecuador against the controversial host nation Quatar, which is facing a lot of criticism, particularly for its treatment of migrant workers, the place of women and LGBT minorities in society and the environmental footprint of the event.

Emmanuel Macron stated last week that we musn’t politicise sport and that questions need to be asked at the right time. To an extent, he’s right. It’s too late to change the venue just before the championships. He’s also announced that he’ll go to Qatar if ‘the blues’ reach the semi-finals. A sporting victory never does any harm to a president’s poll ratings.

Meanwhile, mayors of French towns find themselves in an awkward position. Some, like Michaël Delafosse, the socialist mayor of Montpellier, describe the choice of Qatar as desastrous, even ludicrous. Like Paris, Marseille, Lille, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Reims and many more, Montpellier is going to boycott the competition: they won’t be installing any big screens in the town’s squares to show the matches. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

But, as Voltaire said, it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Bars who’ve installed a big screen (or even a small one) are likely to be packed and their owners happy to have a chance to recoup some of what they lost during the pandemic. Other towns, such as Nice, Cannes and Perpignan, are trying to keep everyone happy by stating that they will show matches from Qatar on big screens “according to the results” of the French team.

Who will win on the World Cup pitch is anybody’s guess. What seems more certain is that the migrant workers, minorities and the environment will be the big losers. For the time being, football is in the headlines, the failed COP27 is already forgotten.

UN CHIEN SABOTE LE TOUR DE FRANCE

S’il y avait une leçon à tirer du Tour de France 2021, c’est que les spectateurs peuvent représenter un danger plus grave aux cyclistes que les autres coureurs.

Vous vous souvenez peut-être qu’en 2021 une habitante du Finistère qui brandissait une pancarte a empiété sur la chaussée, dos au peloton. Elle y avait écrit en grosses lettres Allez opi-omi pour attirer l’attention de ses grands-parents, passionnés de la Grande Boucle. De nombreux cyclistes sont tombés et ont dû abandonner l’étape. Elle a écopé d’une amende de 1 200 euros et a aussi dû verser un euro symbolique à l’Union Nationale des Cyclistes Professionnels.

Jeudi dernier, un accident a été causé par une autre espèce. Au début de la 12e étape, deux coureurs, Yves Lampaert (maillot jaune de la première étape) et Steven Kruijswijk ont chuté à cause d’un chien qui se promenait au coeur du peloton. Les deux cyclistes n’ont souffert que quelques bleus et écorchures, parce que ce n’était que le début de l’étape et on n’allait pas vite. Mais on a évité de peu le ‘château de cartes’. Il est miraculeux que personne d’autre n’ait goûté au bitume.

Malheureusement, il semble que pas mal des chutes chaque année sont liées au comportement insouciant, même irresponsable, des spectateurs au bord de la route. Je vous rappelle que le cycliste portugais Joaquim Agostinho est mort en 1984, suite à un accident quand il a percuté un chien pendant le Tour de l’Algarve. La présence des toutous, même tenus en laisse, peut être très dangereuse au passage des coureurs.

Mesdames et Messieurs les spectateurs, veuillez adopter un comportement responsable dès maintenant!

A DOG SABOTAGES THE TOUR DE FRANCE

If there was a lesson to be learnt from the 2021 Tour de France, it was that the spectators can pose more of a danger to the cyclists than the other riders.

You may remember that in 2021 a Finistère local waving a sign encroached on the road, with her back to the pack. She had written in big letters ‘Allez opi-omi’ (Go on grandad and grandma) to attract the attention of her grandparents, big fans of the ‘Big Loop’. Numerous cyclists fell and had to abandon the stage. She received a fine of 1,200 euros and also had to pay a symoblic one euro to the National Union of Professional Cyclists.

Last Thursday, an accident was caused by another species. At the start of the twelfth stage, two riders, Yves Lampaert (yellow jersey on the first stage) and Steven Kruijswijk fell because of a dog walking right through the pack. The two cyclists only suffered a few bruises and grazes, because it was at the start of the stage and people weren’t going fast. But they only just avoided a ‘house of cards’ situation. It’s miraculous that no-one else got a moutful of asphalt.

Unfortunately, it seems that quite a few falls each year are linked to the unthinking, even irresponsible, behaviour of the spectators along the route. A reminder that the Portuguese cyclist Joaquim Agostinho died in 1984, following an accident when he crashed into a dog during the Tour of the Algarve. The presence of doggies, even on a lead, can be very dangerous to the riders going past.

Ladies and gentlemen spectators, please behave more responsibly from now on!

GABRIEL POULAIN ET SON AVIETTE

Une aviette – drôle de mot. Bravo à vous si vous savez déjà ce que c’est.

Gabriel Poulain, coureur cycliste pistard français de renom, né en 1884 à Saint-Hélier sur l’île de Jersey, est devenu champion du monde de vitesse professionnelle en 1905.

Tôt le matin le 9 juillet 1921, l’aviette, l’invention de Gabriel Poulain, a pris les airs derrière la tribune de l’hippodrome de Longchamps dans le bois de Boulogne à Paris.

Le défi était de réaliser un vol à propulsion humaine d’au moins 10 mètres, à 20 centimètres au minimum de hauteur, dans deux directions opposées.

Ce jour-là, il y a cent ans, l’aviette, une bicyclette volante, a permis à l’aviateur aspirant de remporter le prix Peugeot de 10 000 francs.

GABRIEL POULAIN AND HIS AVIETTE

An ‘aviette’ – funny word. Hats off to you if you already know what it is.

Gabriel Poulain, a famous French track racing cyclist, born in 1884 in Saint-Helier on the island of Jersey, became world professional speed champion in 1905.

Early in the morning of 9 July 1921, the ‘aviette’, brainchild of Gabriel Poulain, took to the skies behind the grandstand at the Longchamps race course in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.

The challenge was to make a human-powered flight of at least 10 metres, at least 20 centimetres off the ground, in both directions.

On that day, a hundred years ago, the ‘aviette’, a flying bicycle, allowed the would-be aviator to win the 10,000 franc Peugeot prize.

ENVIE DE NAGER?

Envie de nager? Prendre un bain de mer ou faire un petit tour à la piscine, ça fait du bien. Mais pendant que vous vous amusez, dédiez une pensée à Arthur Germain, âgé de 20 ans, fils de la maire de Paris Anne Hidalgo, qui est en train de descendre en autonomie les 784 km de la Seine à la nage.

Arthur tire avec lui un kayak chargé d’alimentation, de vêtements, de matériel de campement et équipement d’échantillonnage. Il nage en combinaison pour limiter le risque d’infection et s’est fait vacciner contre la leptospirose.

Les défis physiques et mentaux, ce jeune aventurier s’y connaît bien. À seize ans, Arthur est le plus jeune français à avoir effectué la traversée de la Manche à la nage.

Son parcours de la source de la Seine prés de Dijon à son embouchure au Havre a pour but de sensibiliser à la pollution des fleuves qui provient notamment de la présence de matières fécales, de pesticides et de nitrates de rejets agricoles. Pourtant, il a été agréablement surpris et dit que la Seine ne mérite pas sa mauvaise réputation.

Sa mère souhaite rendre possible la baignade dans la Seine à Paris d’ici 2025. Entretemps, son fils est attendu au Havre le 28 juillet. Quel défi fou!

FANCY A SWIM?

Fancy a swim? Going for a dip in the sea or a little trip to the swimming pool, it does you good. But whilst you’re enjoying yourself, spare a thought for twenty year old Arthur Germain, son of Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who is in the process of doing a solo swim along the 784 km of the Seine.

Arthur is pulling with him a kayak loaded with food, clothing, camping gear and sampling equipment. He’s swimming in a wetsuit to limit the risk of infection and has been vaccinated against leptospirosis.

This young adventurer is no stranger to physical and mental challenges. At the age of sixteen, Arthur became the youngest French person to swim the English Channel.

His journey from the source of the Seine near Dijon to its mouth at Le Havre aims to raise awareness of river pollution which mostly comes from the presence of fecal matter, pesticides and nitrates from agricultural run-off. However, he has been pleasantly surprised and says that the Seine doesn’t deserve its bad reputation.

His mother hopes to make it possible to bathe in the Seine in Paris from 2025. Meanwhile, her son is expected in Le Havre on 28 July. What an amazing challenge!
