On aurait pu craindre que le confinement dû au coronavirus porterait le coup de grâce à La Clef, le dernier cinéma associatif de Paris dans le Ve arrondissement, près du Jardin des Plantes et de la mosquée de Paris.

Au moment du grand renfermement de mars, le cinéma était squatté par un groupe de cinéphiles, spectateurs, ex-salariés et réalisateurs, car le propriétaire des lieux veut vendre le bâtiment. Soutenus, du moins verbalement, par la mairie de Paris et la mairie du Ve, les occupants illégaux assuraient au moins une séance par jour.

Depuis plusieurs années, ce quartier estudiantin est en train de s’embourgeoiser. Le m2 vaut près de 12 000 euros et les célèbres librairies ferment à la pelle.

Mais La Clef, ultime bastion du cinéma indépendant, est devenue porteur d’espoir. Loin des grandes salles impersonnelles qui puent le popcorn, le collectif a trouvé un moyen radical de conserver le cinéma pendant cette période déroutante et anxiogène: ils projètent des films sur le toit du cinéma.

Cette tentative de garder active la présence du cinéma permet aux riverains de voir un film chaque vendredi depuis chez eux, une intervention mémorable qui doit remonter le moral aux cinéphiles. Espérons que le coronavirus ne sonne pas le glas de l’indépendance innovative et que La Clef ne va pas devoir mettre la clef sous la porte.

UP ON THE ROOF

You might have feared that the lockdown due to coronavirus would finish off La Clef, the last community cinema in Paris’ fifth arrondissement, near the Jardin Des Plantes and the Paris mosque.

At the time of the big shutdown in March, the cinema was being squatted by a group of film lovers, spectators, ex-staff and film directors, as the owner of the premises wants to sell the building. Supported, at least verbally, by the Paris and local authorities, the illegal occupants were putting on at least one screening per day.

For several years now, this student quarter has been becoming gentrified. Real estate is worth nearly 12,000 euros per m2 and the famous bookshops are closing by the dozen.

But La Clef (The Key), the last bastion of independent cinema, has become a beacon of hope. A far cry from the huge impersonal multiplexes stinking of popcorn, the collective has found a radical way of keeping cinema going during this baffling and stressful period: they’re projecting films onto the roof of the cinema.

This attempt to keep the cinema’s presence alive allows the locals to see a film every Friday without leaving their homes, a memorable measure designed to cheer up cinema lovers. Let’s hope that the coronavirus doesn’t sound the death knell for innovative independence and that La Clef isn’t going to have to go out of business.

PARIS VOYAGE DANS LE TEMPS

La rue Androuet, à l’ombre du Sacré Coeur, est déjà célèbre parmi les cinéphiles, car c’est là que se trouve la Maison Collignon, l’épicerie qui figure dans le film culte Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain.

Aujourd’hui, deux rues sur la butte Montmartre dans le XVIIIe arrondissement de Paris – la rue Androuet et la rue Berthe – se trouvent dans une déformation du temps.

Le réalisateur Fred Vavayé était en train de tourner un film Adieu Monsieur Haffmann avec Daniel Auteuil, Sara Giraudeau et Gilles Lellouche. Le long-métrage est une comédie noire qui raconte l’histoire d’un bijoutier juif qui se cache dans sa cave pendant l’occupation nazie. Mais le tournage du film a dû s’interrompre à cause du confinement Coronavirus.

On n’a pas pu retirer le décor avant le confinement, donc le quartier est figé dans le temps. Le plateau de tournage comprend des cafés et façades de boutiques de 1942 comme un corsetier, un tailleur, un cordonnier et un miroitier et les murs sont ornés d’affiches de propagande du gouvernement de Vichy. Un sinistre rappel d’une autre époque où la vie était difficile.

PARIS IS TIME TRAVELLING

The rue Androuet, in the shadow of the Sacré Coeur, is already famous amongst film lovers as that’s where you’ll find the Maison Collignon, the grocery store which features in the cult film ‘Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain’.

Today, two streets on the Montmartre hill in the eighteenth ‘arrondissement’ of Paris – rue Androuet and rue Berthe – are caught in a time warp.

The film director Fred Vavayé was in the middle of shooting a film ‘Adieu Monsieur Haffmann’ starring Daniel Auteuil, Sara Giraudeau and Gilles Lelouche. The feature film is a black comedy which tells the story of a Jewish jeweller who hides in his cellar during the Nazi occupation. But shooting had to be halted because of the Coronavirus shutdown.

The set couldn’t be removed before the lockdown, so the neighbourhood is frozen in time. The film set consists of cafés and shopfronts from 1942 like a corset-maker, a tailor, a shoe repairer and a mirror-maker and the walls are adorned with Vichy government propaganda posters. An eerie reminder of another age when life was difficult.

SAGE FEMME

Hier j’ai passé une agréable soirée à regarder le film Sage femme. Deux grandes vedettes du cinéma français, l’indomptable Catherine Deneuve et Catherine Frot, jouent des rôles qui sont comme le jour et la nuit. Certaines scènes sont un peu bébêtes, mais les performances nuancées des deux protagonistes gagnent la partie. Conforme à la tradition cinématique française, le film donne au spectateur un sentiment de bien-être aigre-doux. Ne vous attendez pas à un film d’action!

Les deux Catherine parlent très clairement et pas trop rapidement, donc le dialogue n’est pas trop difficile à comprendre. De toute façon, il y a des sous-titres en anglais.

Catherine Frot a participé à cinq naissances réelles qui ont été filmées en Belgique car la loi française interdit de filmer les enfants de moins de trois mois.

MIDWIFE

Have your French lessons or French conversation circles been suspended because of the Coronavirus? Are you stuck at home twiddling your thumbs? Make the most of the chance to listen to some French.

Yesterday I spent an enjoyable evening watching the film “Midwife”. Two big stars of French cinema, the indomitable Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot, play roles which are like chalk and cheese. Some scenes are a bit corny, but the subtle performances of the two protagonists carry the day. In true French cinematic tradition, the film leaves the viewer with a bittersweet afterglow. Don’t expect an action film!

The two Catherines speak very clearly and not too quickly, so the dialogue is not too hard to understand. Anyway, there are English subtitles.

Catherine Frot took part in five real births which were filmed in Belgium as French law does not allow children under three months to be filmed.

UNE AVANT-PREMIERE PAS COMME LES AUTRES

Ça y est, c’est parti! Les grandes vacances débutent et, comme chaque année, c’est le retour des serpents de mer.

Le film américain Comme des Bêtes 2 sortira en salle en France le 31 juillet. Entretemps, une avant-première à Paris a ouvert ses portes aux bêtes. Environ 70 animaux ont assisté à la projection: des animaux de compagnie du public, ainsi que divers animaux qui correspondaient aux personnages du film et qui les ressemblaient remarquablement. Les comédiens qui ont doublé le film ont apporté un chat à l’image de Chloé et un lapin qui était le sosie de Pompon.

On offrait aux animaux de quoi grignoter et, pour la plupart, ils se sont bien comportés. La majorité s’est endormie. Espérons que c’était un événement unique. Moi, personnellement, je n’ai pas envie de partager mon pop-corn avec le chien du voisin!

Cette vidéo vous donne une idée de la soirée. Les agents d’entretien ont dû avoir du pain sur la planche le lendemain.

A PREVIEW WITH A DIFFERENCE

That’s it, we’re off. The summer holidays are under way and, like every year, it’s the return of the silly season.

The American film “The Secret Life of Pets 2” will be released in France on 31 July. Meanwhile, a preview in Paris opened its doors to animals. About 70 animals attended the screening: cinema-goers’ pets, as well as various animals corresponding to the characters in the film, who looked remarkably like them. The actors who did the voice overs brought along a cat just like Chloé and a rabbit who was the spitting image of Pompon.

The animals were given snacks and, for the most part, behaved themselves well. Most of them went to sleep. Let’s hope it was a one-off event. Personally, I don’t fancy sharing my popcorn with my neighbour’s dog!

L’ARROSEUR ARROSÉ

On a beaucoup parlé récemment de ce braconnier tué par un éléphant et mangé par des lions en Afrique du sud. Il essayait de s’en prendre à un rhinocéros dans le parc national Kruger. Il a payé très cher pour cette attaque, on n’a retrouvé qu’un crâne et un pantalon.

Ça me rappelle l’expression française l’arroseur arrosé. Vous le connaissez peut-être?

L’expression a son origine dans le tout premier film humoristique des frères Lumière, tourné en 1895. Le film en noir et blanc montre un garçon qui fait une farce à un jardinier en mettant le pied sur le tuyau d’arrosage. Le jardinier pense que le tuyau est bouché et regarde le bec, à la suite de quoi le garçon retire son pied et le jardinier est arrosé. Le jardinier court après le garçon, l’attrape, lui donne une fessée et l’arrose à son tour.

THE BITER BIT

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the poacher killed by an elephant and eaten by lions in South Africa. He was after a rhinoceros in the Kruger national park. He paid dearly for this attack, only a skull and a pair of trousers were found.

It reminds me of the French expression “l’arroseur arrosé”. Maybe you know it?

The expression comes from the first ever comedy film by the Lumière brothers, made in 1895. The black and white film shows a boy playing a practical joke on a gardener by putting his foot on the hosepipe. The gardener thinks the hose is blocked and looks down the spout, whereupon the boy removes his foot and the gardener gets sprayed. The gardener chases the boy, catches him, spanks him and sprays him in turn.
