LE MONUMENT À JOHNNY FAIT POLÉMIQUE

Les statues de personnages importants de l’ère du commerce des esclaves ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre ces dernières années. Mais à Bercy dans le 12e arrondissement de Paris en 2021 c’est une toute autre histoire.

Une sculpture rendant hommage au chanteur Johnny Hallyday, décédé en 2017, doit être installée près de la salle de spectacle l’Accor Arena où Johnny a donné 101 concerts.

La statue, d’une hauteur de 6 mètres, consiste en un manche de guitare surplombé d’une Harley Davidson, deux symboles incontestablement représentatifs du chanteur. L’oeuvre est signée Bertrand Lavier et offerte par la galerie Kamel Mennour à la ville.

Pourtant, la maire écolo de Bercy, Emmanuelle Pierre-Marie, est en bisbille avec ses collègues socialistes et LR. Pour elle, au moment où on essaie de créer une ville écologiquement durable, la Harley Davidson envoie le mauvais signal et elle s’y oppose vertement.

Mais il doit bien y avoir des questions beaucoup plus urgentes sur lesquelles on doit plancher: pour la planète, le temps est compté et l’enjeu est grand. À noter qu’on vient d’adopter une réforme qui prévoit le stationnement payant pour les motos dans Paris dès 2022.

Un concert hommage au rockeur aura lieu à Bercy le 14 septembre.

CONTROVERSY OVER JOHNNY MONUMENT

Statues of important figures from the time of the slave trade have been much written about in recent years. But in Bercy in the 12th arrondissement of Paris in 2021, it’s quite a different story.

A sculpture in honour of the singer Johnny Hallyday, who died in 2017, is due to be installed near the concert venue Accor Arena where Johnny played 101 times.

The statue, which is 6 metres high, consists of a guitar neck with a Harley Davidson overhanging it, two symbols which undeniably represent the singer. The artist is Bertrand Lavier and the Kamel Mennour gallery has given it to the town.

However, the green mayor of Bercy, Emmanuelle Pierre-Marie, is at loggerheads with her socialist and conservative colleagues. For her, just when they’re trying to create an ecologically sustainable town, the Harley Davidson sends the wrong signal and she is strongly opposed to it.

But surely there are far more urgent issues we should be working on: the clock is ticking for the planet and the stakes are high. Note that a reform has just been adopted to impose parking charges on motorbikes in Paris from 2022.

A tribute concert to the rock star will take place at Bercy on 14 September.

L’APÉRO QUI ROULE

Les fêtards parisiens qui cherchent une expérience pas comme les autres peuvent profiter du Cyclo-Café qui vous permet de sillonner la capitale à boire un coup entre potes, tout en étant dirigé par un barman sobre.

C’est un concept ludique qui vous amène hors des sentiers battus. Vous conciliez trois activités: un peu de tourisme, la pédale et le levé de coude. On vous propose un trajet rive gauche de 60 minutes sur les plus belles artères parisiennes ou un trajet de 120 minutes avec option karaoké ou pique-nique.

Le bar mobile est surtout populaire pour les enterrements de vie de garçon ou fille. Picoler et faire un peu de sport en même temps, c’est quand même une idée originale. C’est aussi une bonne solution pour trinquer mais éviter d’être arrêté par la police avec trop d’alcool dans le sang car le fait de pédaler permet l’élimination plus rapide de l’alcool ingéré.

Une bonne nouvelle pour les fainéants: la machine est munie de cinq sièges sans pédale. Donc, pour une ambiance de dingo, un moment top dont vous vous souviendrez toujours, pourquoi ne pas essayer le Cyclo-Café?

THE APERITIF ON WHEELS

Parisian party-goers who are looking for an unusual experience can avail themselves of the Cyclo-Café which allows you to criss-cross the capital whilst having a drink with your mates, steered by a sober barman.

It’s a fun concept which takes you off the beaten track. You can combine three activities: a bit of tourism, cycling and having a drink. You can choose from a 60 minute trip on the left bank taking in the most beautiful streets of Paris or a 120 minute trip with a karaoke or picnic option.

The mobile bar is particularly popular for stag nights and hen nights. Boozing and doing a bit of sport at the same time is quite an original idea. It’s also a good solution for raising a toast but avoiding being picked up by the police with too much alcohol in your blood, as pedalling helps to speed up the elimination of the alcohol you’ve consumed.

Good news for lazybones: the machine is equipped with five pedal-free seats. So, for a crazy atmosphere and a great occasion which you’ll always remember, why not try the Cyclo-Café?

GABRIEL POULAIN ET SON AVIETTE

Une aviette – drôle de mot. Bravo à vous si vous savez déjà ce que c’est.

Gabriel Poulain, coureur cycliste pistard français de renom, né en 1884 à Saint-Hélier sur l’île de Jersey, est devenu champion du monde de vitesse professionnelle en 1905.

Tôt le matin le 9 juillet 1921, l’aviette, l’invention de Gabriel Poulain, a pris les airs derrière la tribune de l’hippodrome de Longchamps dans le bois de Boulogne à Paris.

Le défi était de réaliser un vol à propulsion humaine d’au moins 10 mètres, à 20 centimètres au minimum de hauteur, dans deux directions opposées.

Ce jour-là, il y a cent ans, l’aviette, une bicyclette volante, a permis à l’aviateur aspirant de remporter le prix Peugeot de 10 000 francs.

GABRIEL POULAIN AND HIS AVIETTE

An ‘aviette’ – funny word. Hats off to you if you already know what it is.

Gabriel Poulain, a famous French track racing cyclist, born in 1884 in Saint-Helier on the island of Jersey, became world professional speed champion in 1905.

Early in the morning of 9 July 1921, the ‘aviette’, brainchild of Gabriel Poulain, took to the skies behind the grandstand at the Longchamps race course in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.

The challenge was to make a human-powered flight of at least 10 metres, at least 20 centimetres off the ground, in both directions.

On that day, a hundred years ago, the ‘aviette’, a flying bicycle, allowed the would-be aviator to win the 10,000 franc Peugeot prize.

ENVIE DE NAGER?

Envie de nager? Prendre un bain de mer ou faire un petit tour à la piscine, ça fait du bien. Mais pendant que vous vous amusez, dédiez une pensée à Arthur Germain, âgé de 20 ans, fils de la maire de Paris Anne Hidalgo, qui est en train de descendre en autonomie les 784 km de la Seine à la nage.

Arthur tire avec lui un kayak chargé d’alimentation, de vêtements, de matériel de campement et équipement d’échantillonnage. Il nage en combinaison pour limiter le risque d’infection et s’est fait vacciner contre la leptospirose.

Les défis physiques et mentaux, ce jeune aventurier s’y connaît bien. À seize ans, Arthur est le plus jeune français à avoir effectué la traversée de la Manche à la nage.

Son parcours de la source de la Seine prés de Dijon à son embouchure au Havre a pour but de sensibiliser à la pollution des fleuves qui provient notamment de la présence de matières fécales, de pesticides et de nitrates de rejets agricoles. Pourtant, il a été agréablement surpris et dit que la Seine ne mérite pas sa mauvaise réputation.

Sa mère souhaite rendre possible la baignade dans la Seine à Paris d’ici 2025. Entretemps, son fils est attendu au Havre le 28 juillet. Quel défi fou!

FANCY A SWIM?

Fancy a swim? Going for a dip in the sea or a little trip to the swimming pool, it does you good. But whilst you’re enjoying yourself, spare a thought for twenty year old Arthur Germain, son of Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who is in the process of doing a solo swim along the 784 km of the Seine.

Arthur is pulling with him a kayak loaded with food, clothing, camping gear and sampling equipment. He’s swimming in a wetsuit to limit the risk of infection and has been vaccinated against leptospirosis.

This young adventurer is no stranger to physical and mental challenges. At the age of sixteen, Arthur became the youngest French person to swim the English Channel.

His journey from the source of the Seine near Dijon to its mouth at Le Havre aims to raise awareness of river pollution which mostly comes from the presence of fecal matter, pesticides and nitrates from agricultural run-off. However, he has been pleasantly surprised and says that the Seine doesn’t deserve its bad reputation.

His mother hopes to make it possible to bathe in the Seine in Paris from 2025. Meanwhile, her son is expected in Le Havre on 28 July. What an amazing challenge!
