Organiser de grands événements sportifs à huis clos, est-ce une idée qui vous tente?

L’ambiance manquerait certainement à un match de football sans des supporters dans les tribunes. Jouer sous vide serait difficile pour les joueurs qui auraient du mal à se motiver dans un silence sinistre. Mais pour ceux qui ont des symptômes de manque, regarder un match à la télé serait peut-être mieux que rien.

On commence à se rendre compte du rôle des supporters dans le spectacle. Un match sans la clameur de la foule et les applaudissements des fans semblerait creux et appauvri. Roland Garros, l’Euro de football, les JO. Des millions de personnes s’y attendaient avec impatience. Mais organiser ces événements à huis clos pourrait nuire à leur popularité à long terme.

On dit que chaque point de vue apporte un contrepoids. Dans sa pièce de théâtre Huis Clos, Jean-Paul Sartre a écrit que “l’enfer, c’est les autres”. Mais pour ce qui est du sport, le contraire est peut-être vrai. Certains préféreraient se résigner à l’ajournement des grands événements cette année pour s’en régaler de nouveau en 2021. Qu’en pensez-vous?

Organising big sporting events behind closed doors, is this an idea which appeals to you?

There would certainly be an atmosphere bypass if there were no supporters in the stands at a football match. Playing in a vacuum would be difficult for players who would have trouble motivating themselves in an eerie silence. But maybe people experiencing withdrawal symptoms would find watching a match on TV better than nothing.

You begin to realise the part played by the spectators in the spectacle. A match without the roar of the crowd and the clapping of the fans would seem hollow and impoverished. Roland Garros, the European football championship, the Olympic Games. Millions of people were looking forward to them. But staging these events behind closed doors could have an adverse long term effect on their popularity.

It’s said that for every point there’s a counterpoint. In his play “Huis Clos” (Behind Closed Doors), Jean-Paul Sartre wrote that “hell is other people”. But as far as sport is concerned, the opposite might be true. Some people would prefer to resign themselves to postponing big events this year in order to really enjoy them once again in 2021.
